This custom guitar was modelled after traditional mahogany and cedar strip boats to honour the roots of this Canadian tug boat company. The guitar top is cedar with, the back and sides are mahogany and it is finished off with chrome hardware and pinstriped binding. The pin-striping is carried through the back of the neck and into the headstock as well to capture the classic design of wooden boats.
MicMac was the name of McKeil Marine's first tug boat and its name is proudly engraved into the cedar top.
There is a compass rose inlayed on the finger board pointing toward the north star on the third fret and the fretboard itself is a two-toned ebony. The natural transition between the heartwood and sapwood mirrors a horizon line on the open water.
Operating in the maritime sector in Canada since 1956, McKeil Marine is one of the country's leading marine service providers.
This guitar was built in 2017 to honour the College's 50th Anniversary by capturing words and phrases from students, staff and alumni that best summarized their Mohawk experience. These words and phrases were collected through a number of focus groups, arranged by our graphic designer and printed onto the top of the guitar. The back of the guitar was finished in one of the signature colours found in the Mohawk College logo.
